I am grateful for your offer of 10,000 men; but, as at present advised, I do not consider that Washington is in danger, or that there is any emergency requiring 60. or 90. day men.

Annotation
[1] ALS, RPB. William B. Thomas telegraphed Stanton on October 17, ``It appears by the papers Lee is menacing Washington. I could organize I think a large force, perhaps 10,000, in a short time in this city for a campaign of 60 or 90 days if desirable.'' (DLC-RTL).
