Hon. Simon Cameron Washington, D.C.,
Harrisburg, Penn. Oct. 17 1863

I forgot to notify you that your despatch of day-before-yesterday was duly received and immediately attended to in the best way we could think of. A. Lincoln

Annotation

[1]   ALS, RPB. Cameron's telegram received at 10:55 A.M. on October 15 is as follows: ``Our majority in the Senate depends upon the release of Major White. He was captured with Milroys command and an especial exchange ought to be made for him. He is now in Libby Prison.'' State Senator Major Harry White of the Sixty-seventh Pennsylvania Infantry had been captured at Winchester with a large portion of General Milroy's command. Although efforts to make an exchange for White were initiated immediately, he remained in Confederate hands until September 29, 1864.
