Annotation
[1] Tarbell (Appendix), p. 393. Meade's reply was received at 4:50 P.M.: ``Nothing is known here in relation to a man by name Jacob Schwarz, charged with desertion. Should the record in his case reach here, I will inform you of the facts in the case, and will suspend action until your orders are received.'' (DLC-RTL). The record in the case of Private Jacob Schwartz, Company E, Thirteenth Massachusetts Volunteers, sentenced on September 28, 1863, shows that Meade recommended commutation of sentence, and the president returned the papers to the Judge Advocate General without recommendation on April 16, 1864 (DNA WR RG 153, Judge Advocate General, MM 838).
