Major General Meade Washington City,
Army of Potomac Oct. 12. 9.A.M. 1863

What news this morning? A despatch from Rosecrans, leaving him at 7/30 PM. yesterday, says ``Rebel rumors that head of Ewells column reached Dalton yesterday''

I send this for what it is worth. A. LINCOLN

Annotation

[1]   ALS, IHi. Meade's reply was received at 1:10 P.M.:

``We took yesterday some fifty prisoners. . . . There is no doubt but that up to yesterday the whole of Hill's and Ewell's Corps' were here, and some say reinforced by . . . troops from Richmond.

``Lee never would have made the movements he has, leaving a strong position, if he was weakened by the detachment of any portion of Ewell's and Hill's Corps'' (DLC-RTL).
