To William H. Seward1Jump to section
My dear Sir Washington, Oct. 9, 1863.
To-day Mrs. Galez2Jump to section calls to make interest for Mr. Frederick Wippermann, now Consul at Galatz, in Moldavia. She wishes him to be transfered to Hamburg, as a matter of preference; but, at all events, wishes him sent to some more agreeable place than that where he now is. If you can conveniently find a way to oblige Mrs. Galez, I shall be glad. Yours truly. A. LINCOLN
Annotation
[1] ALS, NAuE. James H. Anderson of Ohio is listed in the U.S. Official Register both for 1863 and 1865 as consul at Hamburg. Frederick Wippermann is listed as consul at Galatza in 1863 but is replaced by Oscar Malmros of Minnesota in 1865. No record has been found of a later appointment for Wippermann.
[2] Lincoln wrote ``Mrs. Gales,'' but in both instances seems to have tried to change the final ``s'' to ``z.'' She has not been identified.
