Major-General Meade, Executive Mansion,
Army of Potomac: Washington, D.C., October 3, 1863.

Have you a man in jeopardy as a deserter by the name William T. Evers, private in Company D, Brooklyn Fourteenth State Militia, or Eighty-fourth Volunteers? If you have please send me the facts and conditions of his case. A. LINCOLN.

Annotation

[1]   Tarbell (Appendix), p. 389. Meade replied the same day, ``Private Wm. T.
