Annotation

[1]   Tarbell (Appendix), p. 389. No reply has been located. Army of the Potomac, General Orders No. 90, September 17, 1863, announced sentence of Herman Barber, alias Edmund Von Heinicke, Company D, Ninetieth Pennsylvania Volunteers, to be shot for desertion on September 25, 1863. Presumably Lincoln's telegram refers to the same man. The roster of Company D lists Barber as ``Deserted---April 24, 1864.''
