I congratulate you and all concerned on your recent battles and victories. How does it all sum up?

I especially regret the death of Gen. Hackelman; and am very anxious to know the condition of Gen. Oglesby, who is an intimate personal friend. A. LINCOLN

[1] ALS, RPB. Brigadier General Pleasant A. Hackleman of Indiana was killed and Brigadier General Richard J. Oglesby of Illinois wounded at the Battle of Corinth, Mississippi, on October 3, 1862. On October 10, Grant replied from Jackson, Tennessee, as follows: ``Your dispatch recd. I cannot answer it as fully as I would wish Paroled now eight-thirteen 813 Enlisted Men & forty three (43) Commissioned Officers in good health seven hundred Confederate wounded already to Iuka. Paroled three fifty (350) wounded paroled still at Corinth Cannot tell the number of dead yet. About Eight hundred Rebels already buried. Their loss in Killed about Nine to one of ours. The ground is not yet cleared of their unburied dead Prisoners yet arriving by Every wagon Road & train This does not include Casu[a]lties where [Edward O. C.] Ord attacked in the rear. He has three fifty (350) well prisoners besides the batteries & small arms in large numbers. Our loss there was between four & five hundred (500) Rebel loss about the same Genl Oglesby is shot through the breast & ball lodged in the spine. Hopes for his recovery. Our killed & wounded at Corinth will not Exceed Nine hundred (900) Many of them slightly.'' (DLC-RTL).
