Annotation

[1]   ALS, The Rosenbach Company, Philadelphia and New York. Accompanying Lincoln's letter is a note from Mrs. Lincoln recommending Stackpole for a ``Sutler's place.'' Thomas Stackpole is listed in the U.S. Official Register, 1861, as watchman at the White House. No record of his appointment as sutler has been found, and the Official Register continued to list him in 1863 as watchman.
