Col. Harding desires a position in the Navy. I know not that it can be given him; but as the within letters are written by excellent men personally known to me, I refer the case to the Secretary of the Navy, asking respectful attention to it. A. LINCOLN
Sep. 30. 1862.
Annotation
[1] AES, THaroL. The endorsement is no longer with the papers concerned, and the editors have not been able to identify the case involved, but it is possible that Colonel Abner C. Harding of the Eighty-third Illinois Volunteers was the man seeking a Navy appointment. He was nominated brigadier general of Volunteers and confirmed by the Senate on March 13, 1863.
