To George B. McClellan1Jump to section
I am somewhat anxious that Gen. Van Antwerp shall be appointed to go into Gen. Halleck's staff, unless Gen. McClellan knows some objection, or difficulty. Will he please attend to it?
Dec. 04, 1861. A. LINCOLN
Annotation
[1] AES, IHi. Lincoln's endorsement is written on a letter from Senator James Harlan and other members of the Iowa delegation, November 20, 1861, recommending appointment of Verplanck Van Antwerp of Burlington, Iowa, to General Halleck's staff. Van Antwerp was appointed major and aide-de-camp, January 29, 1862. His appointment as general was probably in the state militia.
