I wish Capt. E. G. Beckwith, to be a Paymaster in the Army, this taking date, as of July 4, 1862---the day on which I recommended & which recommendation is lost. A. LINCOLN
Sep. 15. 1862
Annotation
[1] AES, RPB. Lincoln's endorsement is written on a letter from Senator James W. Nesmith, July 1, 1862, recommending that ``Capt Edward G. Beckwith, of the 3rd. Artillery . . . who has served with great distinction on the staff of Maj. Genl. Banks'' be promoted to major and made a paymaster. Further endorsements indicate that the appointment was made out November 29, 1862, and ``sent to the Secretary but not signed.'' Beckwith's appointment dating from February 8, 1864, finally reached the Senate on May 4 and was confirmed on May 18, 1864.
