Annotation
[1] ALS, IHi. McClellan's ebullient dispatches to Halleck at 8 A.M. reported ``the Enemy . . . in a perfect panic & Gen Lee last night stated publicly that he must admit they had been shockingly whipped,'' (DLC-RTL); and at 10 A.M. reported General Lee wounded and ``It is stated that Lee gives his loss as 15000.'' (I bid.). The prelude to Antietam was somewhat exaggerated. The battles at South Mountain and Crampton's Gap, Maryland, were, however, definite Union victories.
