Annotation

[1]   Chicago Tribune, September 23, and National Intelligencer, September 26, 1862. Reverend William W. Patton and Reverend John Dempster composed the delegation which presented the president with a memorial in favor of national emancipation adopted by a public meeting of Christians of all denominations held in Bryan Hall, Chicago, on September 7. The delegation also presented a similar memorial in German signed by German citizens of Chicago. On September 20 following their visit to Washington, the delegates reported to a meeting in Bryan Hall. This report dated September 21, and signed by Patton and Dempster provides the present text, which includes all of Lincoln's remarks as quoted.
