Sep. 11, 1862 A. LINCOLN.
Annotation
[1] Thomas A. Madigan, A Catalogue of Lincolniana (1929), No. 37. According to the catalog description this endorsement is on Secretary Smith's letter asking Lincoln to see Ross. John Ross, chief of the Cherokees, brought a letter
of introduction from Mark W. Delahay, August 21, 1862 (DLC-RTL). Loyal to the Union, the Cherokees sought protection in Kansas when other tribes were stirred up by Confederate agents. See further Lincoln's letter to Ross September 25, infra.
