[1] AES, IHi. Lincoln's endorsement is written on a letter from Rufus F. Andrews, surveyor of customs at New York City, August 29, 1862, introducing Reverend A. D. Gillette and recommending his son Lieutenant James Gillette of the Third Maryland Infantry ``now acting as Brigade Quartermaster of Gen. [Henry] Prince's Brigade. A strong petition has been presented . . . to have him appointed to the position which he is now temporarily filling. . . .'' Gillette was appointed commissary with rank of captain September 10, 1862.
