Where is Gen. Bragg? What do you know on the subject?
A. LINCOLN
[1] ALS, RPB. General Boyle's reply received at 9 P.M. reported, ``I do not know . . . but believe he is in Tennessee threatening Genl Buell. . . .'' A second telegram received at 10:40 P.M. confirmed the first and conjectured that General Braxton Bragg would cross the Cumberland River above Nashville, and ``as Buell crosses at that place he will move into Ky at Burkesville or Tompkinsville.'' (DLC-RTL). On September 8 at 11:30 A.M. Boyle telegraphed further that ``Intelligent persons who left Nashville on Sixth Inst say that nothing is known of Bragg's army in Tennessee. There is some conjecture that Bragg may have joined the forces near Washington. My view of their plans is likely all wrong.'' (Ibid.).
