I hereby relieve Frederick Van Tine, from the effect of the discharged [sic] mentioned, so far as to authorize the Governor of New-York to give him a Military appointment if he sees fit.

Lincoln's endorsement is written on a letter from Thurlow Weed, August 30, 1862, ``Mr. Van tine, a soldier who has been doing his whole duty during the war, was dismissed for leaving his Regiment with a wound. Gov. Morgan desires to avail himself of the services of a good Officer but can not till he is relieved from the effect of his Discharge.'' Second Lieutenant Frederick Van Tine, Fifth New York Infantry, dishonorably discharged July 28, 1862, served as captain Company I, One Hundred Thirty-first New York Infantry, September 25, 1862 to July 26, 1865.
