With the concurrence, of the Secretary of War and Gen. Halleck, I shall be very glad for Gen. Turchin to be given a Brigade, composed as desired, if convenient, and sent where active duty is now required in Kentucky. A. LINCOLN
Sep. 5. 1862.
Annotation
[1] AES, ORB. Lincoln's endorsement is written on a letter from Governor Richard Yates, August 29, 1862, in support of an application of the Chicago Union Defense and War Committee in behalf of General John B. Turchin, who had been court-martialed and sentenced to dismissal from service because his brigade pillaged Athens, Alabama, in May, 1862. He remained in service until October 4, 1864.
