[1]   LS, IHi. On August 24, 1862, Lincoln's old friend James N. Brown wrote offering the services of the Illinois State Agricultural Society in organizing one or two brigades of men over forty-five years of age for special services. On September 5, John Hay endorsed the letter referring it to the War Department and wrote the letter of acknowledgment which Lincoln signed.
