Sir, Washington, Sep. 1. 1862.
I personally know Dr. Levi D Boone, of Chicago, Illinois, who is not in close confinement, but on limits, on parol, under bonds, and oath of allegiance. From my knowledge of him, and the open, and rather marked part he has taken for the war, I think he should be at least, enlarged generally, on the same terms. If the Sec. of War concurs, let it be done. Yours truly A. LINCOLN
Annotation
[1] ALS, IHi. Dr. Boone had been arrested for giving money to a Confederate prisoner E. H. Green at Camp Douglas (OR, II, IV, 339-40). On September 10, Commissary General of Prisoners William Hoffman reported on the case of Dr. Boone that ``There seems to be no reason to doubt Doctor Boone's loyalty. . . . I should respectfully suggest that he be released.'' (Ibid., 503-504).
