Wright telegraphed Halleck from his headquarters, Department of the Ohio, at Cincinnati on August 31, ``Nelson has been badly beaten, I fear, in an encounter with the enemy near Richmond, Ky.; his force being, as he says, hopelessly broken and scattered. He is in Lexington, Ky., wounded, and I leave for that place in a couple of hours to see what can be done. He gives me no particulars. My orders were to make the Kentucky River the line of defense, and his orders in pursuance seem to have been disregarded. At any rate his force has been routed.'' (OR, I, XVI, II, 464). To Lincoln's telegram Boyle answered: ``I am not accurately informed of the force Gen Nelson had in the Engagement but believe that he had seven or eight thousand men all of them new lev[i]es except eighteenth Ky. His force may have been greater. The Enemys force estimated at fifteen to twenty thousand Morgan has moved from Glasgow in direction of Lebanon. Col Bruce, at Bowling Greene says Buckner, with force of Forest, Stearns & Co is moving from Tomkinsville toward Columbia & Lebanon. We need drilled troops & drilled artillery'' (DLC-RTL).
