[1]   LS, owned by W. E. Louttit, Jr., Providence, Rhode Island. This note is in Hay's handwriting, signed by Lincoln. Reverend S. Irenaeus Prime, editor of the New York Observer wrote Lincoln on August 21, enclosing a clipping from the Observer complimenting the president on his policy.
