[1] AES, IHi. Lincoln's endorsement is written on a letter from Cassius M. Clay, August 19, 1862, recommending that Captain Kenner Garrard, acting colonel in command of cadets at West Point, be appointed brigadier general of Volunteers. Garrard was appointed brigadier general as of July 23, 1863. The widow of Jeptha Garrard became the wife of John McLean.
