Aug. 19. 1862. A. LINCOLN

Annotation

[1]   AES, NHi. Lincoln's endorsement is written on a telegram from Governor James F. Robinson of Kentucky, August 18, 1862, ``Brigade Surgeon Joshua Bradford of Ky is offered the Command of a Regt. of 3 years Infy. His great popularity & worth; his tried courage and his devotion to the Cause impels me to ask in his favor a modification of general orders.'' Robinson, speaker of the Kentucky House of Representatives, became governor upon the resignation of General Beriah Magoffin on August 16, 1862. No reply by Stanton to this telegram has been found, and there is no record of Joshua T. Bradford's appointment as brigadier general. Bradford had fought a desperate battle with his command of Home Guards against a part of John H. Morgan's cavalry.
