Dr. Adolph Mayer [sic], says he was a Brigade Surgeon, & resigned because of a hurt, from which he is sufficiently recovered to resume his duties, which he wishes to do. If the Surgeon General has no objection & will point out the way, I will do what is necessary on my part. A. LINCOLN

Majer had resigned on July 22 after suffering injuries in crossing the Rappahannock, but ``restored by a three weeks' medical treatment'' was ready to re-enter service.
