Respectfully submitted to the Surgeon General---

Dr. Adolph Mayer [sic], says he was a Brigade Surgeon, & resigned because of a hurt, from which he is sufficiently recovered to resume his duties, which he wishes to do. If the Surgeon General has no objection & will point out the way, I will do what is necessary on my part. A. LINCOLN

Annotation

[1]   AES, DLC-RTL. Lincoln's endorsement is written on a letter from Dr. Adolph Majer, late surgeon of the Fourth New York Cavalry, August 18, 1862, asking annulment of his resignation. Majer had resigned on July 22 after suffering injuries in crossing the Rappahannock, but ``restored by a three weeks' medical treatment'' was ready to re-enter service. Surgeon General Hammond replied to Lincoln on August 19 that as regimental surgeon of the Fourth New

York Cavalry Majer was ``not under the immediate assignment of this office'' and could be reappointed only by the governor of the state, but that if he wished to make application to the adjutant general he might be appointed anew without reference to his former regiment (ibid.). Majer was appointed assistant surgeon on October 4, 1862, and surgeon on February 19, 1863.
