N. Y. Tribune August 9. 1862.
When will you come? Will your correspondent come with you?
A. LINCOLN
Annotation
[1] ALS, RPB. See Lincoln to Gay, August 1, supra. Gay replied in an undated letter written after August 22, enclosing a letter from his anonymous correspondent dated August 13 declining to come to Washington because ``I cannot conceive the object of such a visit. . . . I understand the policy is now finally settled that none but white men are to be allowed to give their lives for the preservation of the country.'' Gay's letter commented that Lincoln's ``letter to Mr. Greeley (August 22, infra) has infused new hope among us. . . .'' (DLC-RTL).
