[1] Tracy, p. 210. Major General Silas Casey's division had made a poor showing on the Peninsula (see note to Lincoln's telegram to McClellan, 5 P.M., June 1, supra), and Casey was removed from command. On August 12, he was assigned to receiving and encamping new troops as they arrived in Washington (OR, I, XII, III, 568).
