Executive Mansion, August 7, 1862.

My dear Sir: I have signed and herewith [return] the papers sent yesterday for Vermont, New Hampshire, and Michigan, except in the three cases of departure from the congressional recommendations, which, with the brief, I hold to examine a little. Yours truly, A. LINCOLN.

Annotation

[1]   NH, VII, 306. Secretary Chase sent papers for appointments in Michigan on August 5, and for appointments in New Hampshire and Vermont on August 6, recommending L. G. Berry of Adrian, Michigan, for collector in First District instead of --- Trowbridge; William S. Mills of Lexington, Michigan, for assessor in Fifth District instead of Luther Stanley of Birmingham; and Townsend North of Vassar, Michigan, for assessor in Sixth District instead of --- Bartlett, ``who, it seems, is Postmaster.'' (DLC-RTL). Lincoln followed Chase's recommendations except in the Fifth District, where Stanley received the appointment.
