[1]   Stan. V. Henkels Catalog 1342, January 4, 1924, No. 25. Lincoln's old friend Isaac R. Diller, a captain in the Illinois Militia and clerk of the Illinois House of Representatives (1851-1854), had obtained a new formula for making gunpowder. For further developments see Lincoln to Holloway August 20 and his endorsement of Diller's papers December 15, infra.

[2]   Dr. Charles M. Wetherell was a chemist in the Bureau of Patents.
