I have but slight personal recollection of Mr. Hall; but the writers of the within letters would not say what they do not know. On their representation, I should be glad if an appointment could be consistently given him. A. LINCOLN
Aug. 2. 1862.
Annotation
[1] AES, DNA RG 56, Personnel Records. Lincoln's endorsement is written on a letter from Benjamin F. James, U.S. Patent Office, to Isaac Newton, August 2, 1862, recommending Edward H. Hall of Chicago for an appointment. Hall is listed in the Official Register (1863) as a clerk in the Internal Revenue Office of the Treasury. In 1857-1858 Hall had been associated with the Waukegan, Illinois, Gazette.
