To George B. McClellan1Jump to section
If Gen. McClellan thinks it proper to make Buell a Major General, enabling Sherman to return to Kentucky, it would rather please me. As Buell, by the letter shown me to-day, agrees with Mr. Guthrie about half a dozen more Brig. Genls. being needed in Ky, that, also might be attended to at the same time.
Nov. 27. 1861. A. LINCOLN
Annotation
[1] AES, DLC-RTL. Lincoln's endorsement is written on the back of a copy of a letter from James Guthrie to Joshua F. Speed, November 22, 1861, expressing the wish of himself and many Union men that William T. Sherman should remain in Kentucky to lead troops in the field, and stating that ``We want more Brigadier generals of the best military schools.'' Although dated on the same day as Guthrie's letter to Speed which Lincoln endorsed to McClellan on November 26 (supra), Guthrie's letter carrying Lincoln's endorsement of November 27 seems obviously of prior composition. Speed carried both letters to Washington for Lincoln's consideration.
