Annotation

[1]   Metropolitan Art Association Catalog, January 14, 1914, No. 495. According to the catalog description this communication is an autograph dispatch signed. Governor Gamble telegraphed Attorney General Bates ``or, in his absence, President Lincoln,'' July 27, 1862, ``Rebel forces are approaching this State from Arkansas. If they enter far we will have a general rising, General Schofield is urgently in need of four regiments of infantry.'' (OR, I, XIII, 515). General Schofield's telegram to Stanton was of the same date (Ibid., p. 514).
