I know there is no vacancy of a pay-mastership in the regular army. If there be now or soon will be for volunteers have Mr. Huey named within because Hon. Mr. Hickman seldom asks for anything and because Mr. Huey is abundantly vouched as a good man.

[1] Copy, ISLA. Lincoln's endorsement is written on the back of a letter from John Hickman recommending appointment of William Huey as paymaster. There is no record of Huey's appointment.
