[1] Stan. V. Henkels Catalog 1439, January 31, 1930, No. 71. According to the catalog description, Lincoln's note is written on the back of a letter from John S. Watts, delegate in congress from New Mexico Territory, endorsing appointment of Joseph M. Bell, who had served as second lieutenant in the Second New Mexico Infantry, October 27, 1861 to May 31, 1862. Bell was appointed assistant adjutant general with rank of captain and assigned to the staff of Brigadier General Benjamin S. Roberts, July 24, 1862.
