Major Gen. McClellan July 21 1862
This is Monday. I hope to be able to tell you on Thursday, what is to be done with Burnside. A. LINCOLN
Annotation
[1] ALS, owned by Foreman M. Lebold, Chicago, Illinois. McClellan telegraphed on July 20, 1:30 P.M., ``. . . If I am to have Burnsides troops I would be glad to avail myself of at least a portion of them to occupy a point on south bank of James River. . . .'' (DLC-RTL). Burnside's troops were not to be assigned to McClellan, but to Major General John Pope. Since Burnside ranked Pope, his troops were placed under Major General Jesse L. Reno and assigned to Pope's command on August 1, 1862, with orders to take position near Fredericksburg (OR, I, XII, III, 524).
