Annotation

[1]   AES, NHi. Lincoln's endorsement is written on a telegram from Brigadier General Jeremiah T. Boyle, Louisville, 12 o'clock midnight, July 18, asking authority to raise regiments of twelve-months men: ``The rebel villains cannot be suppressed by leniency or conciliation. . . . Give me the force and authority & I will rid the State of their presence. . . .'' Boyle recruited three regiments of cavalry for one year and two regiments for three years (OR, III, II, 431).
