I understand the young man mentioned within was forced [to] decline this appointment by reason of some injury or disease about the foot which has now recovered; and that he had the promise of a re-appointment on recovery, from Gen. Cameron. Under these circumstances, I shall be glad if a vacancy of 2nd. Lieutenancy can be found for him, especially as it is said he has been studying and preparing in reliance upon such promise. A. LINCOLN
July 18. 1862.
Annotation
[1] AES. NHi. Lincoln's endorsement is written on the back of Secretary Cameron's letter to Wharton White of Philadelphia, notifying him of his appointment as first lieutenant in the Sixteenth Infantry, June 14, 1861. There is no record of White's reappointment prior to 1867, when he was appointed second lieutenant in the Twentieth Infantry on March 7.
