[1] ALS, NN. Stanton endorsed on the bottom of the letter, ``I did promise Mr Hale that Capt Sherburne should have the appointment. I was not aware of any objection by the Adjutant General. I would be glad to have the promise redeemed but yield to whatever the President may think best for the service.'' John P. Sherburne's appointment as assistant adjutant general with rank of major was confirmed by the Senate on July 17.
