Mr. Brown, named within, says a Mr. Hill2Jump to section of Toledo Ohio, was appointed a Major in one of the new regular regiments, & resigned, thus making a vacancy, which is not yet filled. He wishes the place, & I have no objection, believing him to be a worthy gentleman. A. LINCOLN

Annotation

[1]   AES, Parke-Bernet, Feb 17, 1970. Illinois. Lincoln's endorsement is written on the back of a letter from Representative James M. Ashley of Ohio, asking that Samuel E. Brown, appointed captain in the Seventeenth Infantry, Regular Army, be given a majority. An endorsement by Benjamin F. Wade concurs in Ashley's request. There is no record of Samuel E. Brown's appointment as major.

[2]   Charles W. Hill, who declined appointment in the Regular Army, but served as colonel of the One Hundred Twenty-eighth Ohio Infantry.
