[1] AES, DNA NR RG 48, Applications, General Land Office, Registers and Receivers, Nevada Territory, Box 1285. Lincoln's endorsement is written on a letter from Representative Ambrose W. Clark of New York, July 8, 1862, favorably endorsed by Smith, recommending appointment of Clement T. Rice as register of the Land Office at Carson City. Rice's appointment was confirmed by the Senate on July 17.
