If the Sec. of State can and will find a consulate for Rev. Mr. Carothers, I have no objection & shall even be pleased.
Nov. 18. 1861 A. LINCOLN
Annotation
[1] AES, DNA FS RG 59, Appointments, Box 248. Lincoln's endorsement is written on the back of a letter from Reverend John C. Smith, pastor of the Fourth Presbyterian Church of Washington, November 15, 1861, asking a consulship for Reverend Andrew G. Carothers, who had been removed as consul at Turks Islands (Bahamas) ``. . . in the hurry and pressure of public business. . . and not because of any objections to him, politically, or officially. . . .'' (Ibid.). For Carothers' appointment, see Lincoln to Seward, December 19, infra.
