Annotation

[1]   ALS, RPB. Halleck replied at 6 P.M., ``The Enemy attacked us at Booneville yesterday in considerable force. . . . Particulars not yet received--- . . . . According to reports . . . [Braxton] Bragg is preparing to attack us. . . . Under these circumstances I do not think I could safely be absent from my Army, although being somewhat broken in health and wearied . . . a trip to Washington would be exceedingly desirable.''
