Annotation

[1]   AE, DNA WR RG 94, U.S. Military Academy, 1862, No. 149, Box 80. Lincoln's endorsement is written on an undated letter on ``Executive Mansion'' stationery from John H. Peters, reminding the president that ``some months---near a year---he said he would appoint a young friend of mine to the West Point School. . . . I would not ask it were not the applicant a young gentleman A. Keller Jr. a loyal South Carolinian of more than ordinary mental & moral strength.'' There is no record of Keller's appointment.
