Annotation

[1]   AES, OClWHi. Lincoln's endorsement is written on the back of an undated note from Seward: ``My dear President: Have you any good or bad news. W. H. S.'' Although neither note is dated, it seems probable that the exchange took place just before Seward's departure for New York to confer with the Union Defense Committee about raising more troops. McClellan's dispatch of June 28 had not as yet been received.
