``It is impossible to tell where re-enforcements ought to go, as I am yet unable to predict result of approaching battle. . . . It is not probable that I can maintain telegraphic communications more than an hour or two longer. . . .'' (OR, I, XI, III, 270).

Dix to McClellan, June 28, ``. . . Commodore Goldsborough has been with me two hours, and no effort will be spared to support you at all points. I will open a regular communication with you by steam the moment I hear from you. I have a dispatch from the President expressing an earnest desire that I should reach you with a message, that I may know your wants. . . .'' (Ibid., p. 269).
