The appointment of Mr. W. W. Leland, is desired by the Irish Brigade, including much of the elements of the late 69th. & of Col. Mulligan's regiment. If it is possible to oblige them in this, let it be done. A. LINCOLN

Annotation

[1]   AES, owned by Charles W. Olsen, Chicago, Illinois. Lincoln's endorsement is written on a letter from Governor Edwin D. Morgan, November 13, 1861, recommending appointment of William W. Leland of New York City as brigade commissary designated by Thomas F. Meagher acting brigadier general of the Irish Brigade. Leland was appointed with rank of captain from November 16, 1861.
