Lincoln's endorsement is written on the cover of the court-martial record of Private William Griffin of Company K, Fifth New York Volunteers, sentenced by court-martial January 8, 1862, on charges of desertion, to six months' imprisonment wearing ball and chain, and ``that he forfeit all pay and allowances now due or which may become due him by reason of his enlistment, except the allowances for clothing and that at the end of said time of six months, one half his head be shaved and that he be dishonorably discharged the service and be drummed out in presence of his regiment.''
