[1] Copy, ISLA. The body of this letter as well as the endorsement appears in Lincoln's autograph. Benjamin S. Roberts' nomination as brigadier general of Volunteers had been confirmed by the Senate on June 11. No record has been found of his being brevetted a brigadier general in the Regular Army until the Senate confirmed his brevet rank on July 25, 1866, to date from March 13, 1865.
