Major Genl. Banks Washington City, D.C.
Middletown June 22 1862
I am very glad you are looking well to the West for a movement of the enemy in that direction. You know my anxiety on that point. All was quiet at Gen. McClellan's Head-Quarters at 2 o'clock to-day.2Jump to section A. LINCOLN
Annotation
[1] ALS, RPB. Banks telegraphed Stanton from Middletown, Virginia, 1:45 P.M., ``. . . the enemy was in force near Luray. It was fully believed that Jackson was moving toward Manassas Gap Railroad. . . to intercept. . . Shields. Ewell was also said to be at Luray. . . . We are looking well to the west, in which direction the enemy threatens a movement. . . .'' (OR, I, XII, III, 423).
[2] McClellan telegraphed Stanton at 1:30 P.M., ``Some sharp attempts of the enemy last evening and night to drive in Hooker's pickets. They certainly failed and were driven back. . . . Nothing else of interest. . . .'' (OR, I, XI, III, 241).
